I've been re-writing the first chapter for my story Kyrie Elesion, and it's made me think a lot about how to start a story. For me the beginning is the most difficult part to write. I never know where to start and I always get caught up in making the first chapter perfect. In my opinion, the beginning of the story is one of the most important parts. It is what hooks your reader and sets up the tone for the rest of the book. There are a couple of red flags for me when reading an opening chapter.
Some of these include:
Flowery and pointless scenery descriptionsThe main character dies "It was all a dream"Nothing import happensI'm thrown into
